Today, providing for good ventilation in the stables is indispensable. However, one negative side effect is that the slurry, especially that stored in sluice gate installations, will lose moisture and, thus, become thicker. The extra absorbent bedding in the cubicles will also thicken the slurry. In larger stable complexes with separate functional units this will deprive the young cattle and heifer sheds of sedimented milking water and the thinner slurry produced by lactating cows.
